Neurones, synapses and the endocrine system
- 3 things to know
- AS 4
Overview
Sensory, relay and motor neurones, myelin and impulse speed calculations, transmission at synapses, excitation, inhibition and summation, endocrine glands, and adrenaline in fight or flight.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is the function of a relay neurone?
What is the function of a motor neurone?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is the function of a sensory neurone?
Model answer
A sensory neurone carries impulses from a receptor to the central nervous system. A sensory neurone detecting heat in a fingertip sends its signal to the spinal cord.
- 2
What is the function of a relay neurone?
Model answer
A relay neurone passes impulses between sensory and motor neurones within the brain or spinal cord. Relay neurones make up most of the central nervous system.
- 3
What is the function of a motor neurone?
Model answer
A motor neurone carries impulses from the central nervous system to an effector. The effector is a muscle that contracts or a gland that secretes.
- 4
How does a myelin sheath speed up a nerve impulse?
Model answer
Myelin insulates the axon, so the impulse jumps between the gaps called nodes of Ranvier. Saltatory conduction makes a myelinated neurone far faster than an unmyelinated one.
- 5
An impulse travels 0.90 m along a sensory neurone from a fingertip to the spinal cord in 0.015 s. What is its speed?
Model answer
The impulse travels at 60 m s⁻¹. The working is 0.90 ÷ 0.015 = 60 m s⁻¹.
- 6
Twelve students hold hands in a chain 18 m long and a squeeze takes 3.0 s to pass along it. Why does the calculated speed of 6.0 m s⁻¹ underestimate the true speed of a nerve impulse?
Model answer
The time includes each student's brain deciding to respond and synapses delaying the signal. The real conduction time along the arms is only a small part of the total.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Brain Science, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
