Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What is schizophrenia?

    Model answer

Schizophrenia is a severe mental illness in which a person's contact with reality is disturbed. Schizophrenia affects about 1% of people and usually begins in late adolescence or early adulthood.

  2. 2

What are the positive symptoms of schizophrenia?

    Model answer

Positive symptoms are experiences added to normal functioning, such as hallucinations and delusions. A person may hear voices or believe they are being persecuted.

  3. 3

What are the negative symptoms of schizophrenia?

    Model answer

Negative symptoms are a loss of normal functions, such as motivation, speech and emotional expression. A person may withdraw socially and neglect self-care.

  4. 4

What do twin studies suggest about the genetics of schizophrenia?

    Model answer

Gottesman's review in 1991 found a concordance of about 48% for identical twins and about 17% for non-identical twins. The higher figure for identical twins points to a genetic component.

  5. 5

Why does a twin concordance well below 100% suggest that genes alone do not cause schizophrenia?

    Model answer

Identical twins share all their genes, yet many twins of a person with schizophrenia never develop it. Environmental stressors must also contribute, as the diathesis-stress model proposes.

  6. 6

State the original dopamine hypothesis of schizophrenia.

    Model answer

The original dopamine hypothesis proposes that schizophrenia results from too much dopamine activity in subcortical pathways. Excess dopamine is linked to hallucinations and delusions.
