Medicines from natural sources, drug names and the ATC system
- 3 things to know
- AS 6
Overview
Paclitaxel, digitoxin, heparin, trabectedin, tiotropium and penicillin, extracting drugs from plants, the ATC classification, and chemical, generic and trade names.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why did the supply of paclitaxel become a problem, and how was it solved?
Where does digitoxin come from, and how was its use discovered?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Where does paclitaxel come from, and how does it treat cancer?
Model answer
Paclitaxel, sold under the trade name Taxol, was first extracted from the bark of the Pacific yew tree. Paclitaxel stabilises microtubules so cancer cells cannot complete cell division.
- 2
Why did the supply of paclitaxel become a problem, and how was it solved?
Model answer
Removal of the bark killed the slow-growing Pacific yew and gave very little drug per tree. Paclitaxel is now made semi-synthetically from a precursor in the renewable needles of the European yew.
- 3
Where does digitoxin come from, and how was its use discovered?
Model answer
Digitoxin is extracted from the foxglove plant, Digitalis purpurea. William Withering described using foxglove to treat patients with dropsy, a swelling caused by heart failure, in 1785.
- 4
How does digitoxin affect the heart, and why must its dose be controlled carefully?
Model answer
Digitoxin strengthens the heart's contractions and slows its rate, helping in heart failure and atrial fibrillation. The toxic dose is close to the effective dose, so blood levels are monitored.
- 5
Where does heparin come from, and what is it used for?
Model answer
Heparin is extracted from the intestinal lining of pigs. Heparin is an anticoagulant given by injection to prevent and treat blood clots.
- 6
What is the natural source of trabectedin, sold as Yondelis, and how is it now produced?
Model answer
Trabectedin was discovered in a Caribbean sea squirt, Ecteinascidia turbinata, and is used for some soft-tissue cancers. Harvesting enough sea squirts was impractical, so the drug is now made semi-synthetically.
