Investigation design, Design of Experiments and project plans
- 3 things to know
- A2 1
Overview
Aims, variables and hypotheses, choosing methods and analysis, Design of Experiments and factorial designs with worked effects, interactions, trial runs, milestones, Gantt charts and resources.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What are the independent, dependent and control variables in an experiment?
In an investigation of how pH affects catalase activity, identify the independent and dependent variables and two control variables.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is the aim of a scientific investigation?
Model answer
An aim is a clear statement of what the investigation sets out to find. An example is to find how temperature affects the rate of an enzyme-controlled reaction.
- 2
What are the independent, dependent and control variables in an experiment?
Model answer
The independent variable is the one deliberately changed, and the dependent variable is the one measured. Control variables are kept constant so that only the independent variable affects the result.
- 3
In an investigation of how pH affects catalase activity, identify the independent and dependent variables and two control variables.
Model answer
The independent variable is pH and the dependent variable is the rate of oxygen production. Temperature and the concentration of hydrogen peroxide are two control variables.
- 4
Write a hypothesis for an investigation into the effect of temperature on the rate of an enzyme-controlled reaction.
Model answer
The rate of the reaction will increase as temperature rises up to an optimum. Above the optimum the rate will fall as the enzyme denatures.
- 5
Why should different approaches be evaluated before one method is chosen?
Model answer
Comparing approaches shows which will give the most valid and precise data within the limits of time, cost and safety. The chosen method and hypothesis can then be justified.
- 6
Why should the analytical techniques be decided at the planning stage?
Model answer
Planned techniques, such as colorimetry or a t-test, decide what data must be collected and how many repeats are needed. The equipment and training required also follow from the chosen techniques.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Scientific Method, Investigation, Analysis and Evaluation, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
