Structure of the eye, rods and cones
- 3 things to know
- A2 4
Overview
The cornea, lens, iris, pupil and ciliary muscles, the retina, fovea and blind spot, the humours, rods and cones, colour in dim light and stereoscopic vision.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is the role of the lens in the eye?
What do the iris and pupil do?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What does the cornea do?
Model answer
The cornea is the clear curved front of the eye that does most of the focusing. Light bends most at the cornea because of the large change in refractive index from air.
- 2
What is the role of the lens in the eye?
Model answer
The lens is a flexible, transparent structure that fine-tunes the focus. The lens changes shape to focus objects at different distances onto the retina.
- 3
What do the iris and pupil do?
Model answer
The pupil is the opening that lets light into the eye. The iris is the coloured muscular ring that changes the size of the pupil to control how much light enters.
- 4
How does the pupil respond to bright light?
Model answer
Circular muscles in the iris contract, making the pupil smaller. Less light enters, protecting the retina from damage.
- 5
What do the ciliary muscles do?
Model answer
The ciliary muscles form a ring around the lens, attached to it by suspensory ligaments. Contraction and relaxation of the ciliary muscles change the shape of the lens.
- 6
What is the retina?
Model answer
The retina is the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. The retina contains rods and cones that convert light into nerve impulses.
