Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Describe the multi-store model of memory.

    Model answer

The multi-store model proposes three separate stores of memory. Information enters a sensory register, and attention passes it into short-term memory. Rehearsal then transfers it to long-term memory.

  2. 2

What are the coding, capacity and duration of the sensory register?

    Model answer

The sensory register holds information in the form it arrived, such as visual or acoustic. The sensory register has a very large capacity but keeps information for well under a second.

  3. 3

What are the coding, capacity and duration of short-term memory?

    Model answer

Short-term memory codes information mainly acoustically and holds about seven items, plus or minus two. Short-term memory lasts only about 18 to 30 seconds without rehearsal.

  4. 4

What are the coding, capacity and duration of long-term memory?

    Model answer

Long-term memory codes information mainly by meaning, which is semantic coding. Long-term memory has an effectively unlimited capacity and can last a lifetime.

  5. 5

How does the case of the patient HM support the multi-store model?

    Model answer

HM had most of both hippocampi removed in 1953 to treat severe epilepsy. HM's short-term memory still worked, but he could no longer form new long-term memories, suggesting separate stores.

  6. 6

    What is episodic memory?

    Model answer

Episodic memory is the long-term store of personal experiences, such as a tenth birthday party. Episodic memories include details of when and where events happened and how they felt.
