Idea generation, critiques and computer simulation
- 3 things to know
- AS 1 Paper 2
Overview
Thought showers, lateral thinking, attribute analysis, SCAMPER and inversion, design critiques, developing and refining ideas, and 2D, 3D and fluid dynamics simulation.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is lateral thinking?
Give an example of lateral thinking applied to a kettle.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What rules make a thought shower productive?
Model answer
A thought shower records every idea quickly and aims for quantity. Criticism is postponed so that unusual ideas are not rejected too early.
- 2
What is lateral thinking?
Model answer
Lateral thinking is solving a problem by approaching it from an unexpected direction rather than by step-by-step logic. Edward de Bono introduced the term in 1967.
- 3
Give an example of lateral thinking applied to a kettle.
Model answer
The designer asks how to avoid boiling more water than needed, not how to improve the lid. The new question leads to kettles that dispense one cupful at a time.
- 4
What is attribute analysis?
Model answer
Attribute analysis lists the attributes of an existing product, such as shape, material, colour, size and function. Each attribute is then varied in turn to generate new ideas.
- 5
Apply attribute analysis to a desk lamp.
Model answer
The designer lists attributes such as the base, arm, light source, switch and material. Replacing one attribute, such as a rigid arm with a flexible silicone neck, can give a new concept.
- 6
What does each letter of SCAMPER stand for?
Model answer
SCAMPER stands for Substitute, Combine, Adapt, Modify, Put to another use, Eliminate and Reverse. Each word prompts a different change to an existing product.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Designing and Manufacturing Products, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
