Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What is embodied energy?

    Model answer

Embodied energy is the total energy used to extract, process, manufacture and transport a material or product. Aluminium smelted from ore has a very high embodied energy.

  2. 2

How does embodied energy influence material selection?

    Model answer

A designer may choose a material with lower embodied energy, such as timber instead of aluminium, where performance allows. Recycled material usually carries far less embodied energy than virgin material.

  3. 3

    What is responsible sourcing?

    Model answer

Responsible sourcing means obtaining materials legally and ethically, with fair labour and minimal environmental harm. FSC certification shows that timber comes from responsibly managed forests.

  4. 4

Why do designers specify recycled content?

    Model answer

Recycled content reduces demand for virgin raw materials, energy and landfill space. A recycled-content claim also signals environmental commitment to customers.

  5. 5

Why is recycling aluminium so beneficial?

    Model answer

Recycled aluminium needs only a small fraction of the energy used to smelt new metal from bauxite. The metal can be recycled repeatedly without losing its properties.

  6. 6

What are scarce metals, and why is their use a concern?

    Model answer

Scarce metals, such as cobalt, indium and rare earth elements, come from limited or hard-to-mine deposits. Supplies can run short, prices can soar and mining often harms communities and habitats.
