Finishes for metals
- 3 things to know
- AS 1 Paper 1
Overview
Surface preparation, painting, powder coating, plastic dip coating, electroplating, anodising, enamelling and lacquering, with finishes justified for gates, torches and cookware.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why are finishes applied to metals?
Why is surface preparation essential before finishing a metal?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Why are finishes applied to metals?
Model answer
A finish protects a metal from corrosion and wear. A finish can also add colour, improve feel or give electrical insulation.
- 2
Why is surface preparation essential before finishing a metal?
Model answer
Grease, rust and scale stop a finish bonding to the metal. A poorly bonded finish peels, letting moisture reach the surface and start corrosion.
- 3
Describe how mild steel is painted to give lasting protection.
Model answer
The surface is degreased and any rust or scale is removed. A primer is applied to help adhesion and resist rust, followed by top coats of paint.
- 4
What are the advantages and limitations of paint on metal?
Model answer
Paint is cheap, comes in many colours and can be applied by brush or spray. Paint chips and scratches easily, exposing the metal to corrosion.
- 5
What is powder coating?
Model answer
Powder coating sprays a dry polymer powder onto metal using an electrostatic charge. The part is then baked so the powder melts into a tough, even coat.
- 6
Describe plastic dip coating.
Model answer
The metal is heated in an oven and dipped into a fluidised bed of polymer powder. Air blown up through the powder makes it behave like a liquid. The powder melts onto the hot metal, forming a smooth, thick plastic layer.
