Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    Describe the properties of HDPE.

    Model answer

HDPE is stiff, strong and tough for a polyethylene, with good chemical resistance. HDPE is lightweight, food safe and has a waxy, low-friction surface.

  2. 2

    Give typical uses of HDPE.

    Model answer

HDPE is used for milk bottles, detergent bottles, buckets, crates and chopping boards. HDPE is also used for underground water and gas pipes.

  3. 3

Why is HDPE suitable for a bottle of bleach?

    Model answer

HDPE resists attack from strong chemicals such as bleach. HDPE is tough enough not to split if the bottle is squeezed or dropped.

  4. 4

Why is HDPE used for chopping boards?

    Model answer

HDPE is hygienic, does not absorb liquids and resists damage from knives. HDPE is also food safe and can be cleaned in a dishwasher.

  5. 5

    Describe the properties of LDPE.

    Model answer

LDPE is soft, flexible and tough, with good chemical resistance. LDPE is a good electrical insulator and has a low softening temperature.

  6. 6

    Give typical uses of LDPE.

    Model answer

LDPE is used for carrier bags, bin liners and packaging film. LDPE is also used for squeezy bottles and flexible toys.
