  1. 1

    What is quality control?

    Model answer

Quality control is inspecting and testing products or parts to find those that fail to meet the standard. Faulty items are rejected or reworked.

  2. 2

    What is quality assurance?

    Model answer

Quality assurance is a system of planned procedures covering every stage, from design and suppliers to delivery, so that faults are prevented. Quality is built in rather than inspected in.

  3. 3

Why is quality assurance more effective than relying on quality control alone?

    Model answer

Quality control only finds faults after the work is done, so scrap and rework still cost money. Quality assurance tackles the causes, so fewer faults are made at all.

  4. 4

    What is ISO 9001?

    Model answer

ISO 9001 is the international standard for quality management systems. A certified company has shown an independent auditor that it documents, follows and improves its quality procedures.

  5. 5

Why do customers often require suppliers to hold ISO 9001 certification?

    Model answer

Certification gives evidence that the supplier works to consistent, audited procedures. The customer can then trust incoming parts and may inspect them less.

  6. 6

What does ISO 9001 certification not guarantee?

    Model answer

ISO 9001 certifies the management system, not the quality of any particular product. A certified firm can still make a poorly designed product consistently.
