Materials, manufacture and sustainability of existing products
- 3 things to know
- AS 2
Overview
Identifying materials, manufacturing methods and scale, evidence of injection moulding, product sustainability and the 6 Rs, repair, end of life, life cycle assessment and packaging.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How can a designer identify how an existing product was manufactured?
What evidence on a plastic product shows it was injection moulded?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Why should a designer identify the materials of existing products?
Model answer
Materials determine a product's strength, weight, cost, appearance and environmental impact. Knowing them shows why a product performs as it does.
- 2
How can a designer identify how an existing product was manufactured?
Model answer
Clues such as ejector pin marks, split lines and uniform wall thickness suggest injection moulding. Weld lines and bends suggest fabricated sheet metal.
- 3
What evidence on a plastic product shows it was injection moulded?
Model answer
Injection-moulded parts often show small circular ejector pin marks and a sprue point. The parts usually have consistent wall thickness and fine detail.
- 4
Why is identifying the scale of production useful in product analysis?
Model answer
Mass-produced products use processes with high set-up costs but low unit costs. The scale of production explains the choice of materials and processes.
- 5
What does product sustainability mean?
Model answer
Product sustainability is how far a product limits harm to people and the environment across its life. Materials, energy use, lifespan and disposal all count.
- 6
What are the 6 Rs of sustainable design?
Model answer
The 6 Rs are reduce, reuse, recycle, rethink, refuse and repair. Each gives a way to lessen a product's environmental impact.
