Name the three main types of wood stain.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What are the main purposes of applying a finish to wood?
Model answer
A finish protects wood from moisture, decay, dirt and wear. A finish also improves appearance, for example by bringing out the grain or adding colour.
- 2
What does a wood stain do, and what does it not do?
Model answer
A stain changes or enhances the colour of wood while letting the grain show. A stain gives little protection, so a clear topcoat is usually applied over it.
- 3
Name the three main types of wood stain.
Model answer
Wood stains may be water based, spirit based or oil based. Spirit stains dry quickest, and water-based stains can raise the grain.
- 4
How do oils such as Danish oil and teak oil finish wood?
Model answer
Oils soak into the surface and harden, enhancing the grain with a natural look. Oils give some water resistance but need reapplying from time to time.
- 5
Why is a food-safe oil used on a beech chopping board rather than varnish?
Model answer
A food-safe oil soaks into the wood and is not toxic in contact with food. Varnish would chip under knife cuts, leaving flakes in the food.
- 6
What is wax polish, and when is it used?
Model answer
Wax polish, often based on beeswax, gives a soft sheen and a pleasant feel. Wax gives little protection and is used on indoor furniture, often over another finish.
