Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What are manufactured boards?

    Model answer

Manufactured boards are sheet materials made from wood veneers, strips, chips or fibres bonded with adhesive. Many use timber waste or low-grade wood.

  2. 2

State the main advantages of manufactured boards over solid timber.

    Model answer

Manufactured boards come in large, flat sheets far wider than any plank. The boards are stable and do not warp, split or shrink as solid timber does. Manufactured boards are usually cheaper and of consistent quality.

  3. 3

In what sheet size are manufactured boards usually supplied?

    Model answer

Manufactured boards are usually supplied in sheets of 2440 mm × 1220 mm. Common thicknesses range from about 3 mm to 25 mm.

  4. 4

    How is plywood made?

    Model answer

Plywood is made from an odd number of thin veneers glued together. The grain of each layer runs at 90° to the layer beside it.

  5. 5

Why does plywood have an odd number of layers with alternating grain?

    Model answer

The crossed grain gives strength in both directions and resists splitting. An odd number of plies keeps both face grains running the same way, so the board stays balanced and flat.

  6. 6

What makes some grades of plywood suitable for boat building and outdoor use?

    Model answer

Exterior and marine grades of plywood are bonded with waterproof adhesive. The layers resist separating when wet, so the board stays strong.
