Gear types and gear trains
- 3 things to know
- AS 1 Paper 2
Overview
Spur, bevel and worm gears, rack and pinion, gear train velocity ratios with worked calculations, idler and compound gears, and the effect of gearing on torque.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What are bevel gears used for?
Describe a worm and wheel.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a spur gear, and how do two meshing spur gears turn?
Model answer
A spur gear is a toothed wheel with straight teeth parallel to its axis. Two meshing spur gears on parallel shafts turn in opposite directions.
- 2
What are bevel gears used for?
Model answer
Bevel gears have cone-shaped teeth and transmit drive between shafts set at an angle. The shafts are usually at 90°, as in a hand drill.
- 3
Describe a worm and wheel.
Model answer
A worm is a screw-threaded shaft that meshes with a toothed worm wheel at 90°. One turn of a single-start worm moves the wheel on by one tooth.
- 4
Why is a worm and wheel usually described as self-locking?
Model answer
Friction between the thread and the teeth normally stops the wheel driving the worm backwards. A load held by the wheel therefore cannot run back, as on a winch.
- 5
What does a rack and pinion do?
Model answer
A rack and pinion converts rotary motion into linear motion, or linear motion into rotary. The pinion is a small gear and the rack is a flat toothed bar.
- 6
A 24-tooth pinion meshes with a rack whose teeth are 3 mm apart. How far does the rack move when the pinion makes 2.5 revolutions?
Model answer
The rack moves 180 mm. One revolution moves the rack 24 × 3 = 72 mm, and 2.5 × 72 = 180 mm.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Mechanical and Pneumatic Components, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
