Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Describe how a compressor installation supplies compressed air.

    Model answer

An electric motor drives a compressor that pumps air into a receiver tank. A pressure switch starts and stops the motor to keep the receiver between set pressures.

  2. 2

What is the purpose of the receiver in a compressor installation?

    Model answer

The receiver stores compressed air so demand can be met without the compressor running constantly. The receiver also smooths out pressure pulses and lets water condense out.

  3. 3

Why does an air main slope slightly, with branch lines taken from the top of the pipe?

    Model answer

Water condensing in the main runs down the slope to a drain point. Branch lines taken from the top of the pipe keep that water out of the circuits.

  4. 4

What does the filter in a filter, regulator and lubricator unit do?

    Model answer

The filter removes water droplets, dirt and pipe scale from the air. The air is swirled so particles are thrown out into a bowl that can be drained.

  5. 5

What does the regulator in a filter, regulator and lubricator unit do?

    Model answer

The regulator reduces the supply pressure to the working pressure a circuit needs. The regulator holds that pressure steady as demand changes. A gauge shows the set pressure.

  6. 6

What does the lubricator in a filter, regulator and lubricator unit do?

    Model answer

The lubricator adds a fine mist of oil to the air. The oil lubricates the moving parts of valves and cylinders and reduces wear.
