  1. 1

What is rolling as a forming process?

    Model answer

Rolling is passing metal between pairs of rotating rollers to reduce its thickness or change its cross-section. Rolling produces sheet, plate, bar and structural sections such as I-beams.

  2. 2

Compare hot rolling with cold rolling of steel.

    Model answer

Hot rolling works steel above its recrystallisation temperature, so large reductions are easy but the surface is scaled. Cold rolling at room temperature gives a bright, accurate surface and work-hardens the steel.

  3. 3

    What is blanking?

    Model answer

Blanking is shearing a flat shape out of sheet metal using a punch and die in a power press. The piece punched out, called the blank, is the part that is kept.

  4. 4

Explain the difference between blanking and piercing.

    Model answer

Blanking keeps the piece that is punched out and discards the surrounding sheet. Piercing punches a hole, so the removed slug is scrap and the sheet is kept.

  5. 5

How is a steel washer made in a press?

    Model answer

A progressive die pierces the central hole and then blanks the outer circle as the strip steps forward. Each press stroke completes one washer, so output is very fast.

  6. 6

Why does the clearance between a blanking punch and its die matter?

    Model answer

A small, correct clearance gives a clean sheared edge with little burr. Too much clearance tears the metal and leaves a large burr that must be removed.
