Key term

What are the properties of rigid uPVC, and why is it used for window frames and guttering?

Key term

Describe the properties of general-purpose polystyrene.

Key term

What is high impact polystyrene, and why is it used for vacuum forming?

Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Describe the properties of general-purpose polystyrene.

    Model answer

General-purpose polystyrene is rigid, clear, lightweight and cheap. General-purpose polystyrene is brittle and cracks easily.

  2. 2

What is high impact polystyrene, and why is it used for vacuum forming?

    Model answer

High impact polystyrene has rubber added to make it tougher and less brittle. The sheet softens evenly and picks up detail well, so it suits vacuum forming.

  3. 3

Give typical uses of high impact polystyrene.

    Model answer

High impact polystyrene is used for yoghurt pots, food trays and product casings. High impact polystyrene is also used for model making and packaging inserts.

  4. 4

What is expanded polystyrene, and what are its properties?

    Model answer

Expanded polystyrene is a foam of polystyrene beads expanded with gas. Expanded polystyrene is very light, insulates well against heat and absorbs shock.

  5. 5

Why is expanded polystyrene used as packaging for electrical goods?

    Model answer

Expanded polystyrene absorbs impact and cushions the product in transit. Expanded polystyrene is also very light, so it adds little to transport costs.

  6. 6

Why is expanded polystyrene used in bicycle helmet liners?

    Model answer

The foam crushes on impact and absorbs energy that would otherwise reach the head. Expanded polystyrene is light enough to wear comfortably.
