Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

How is a clear material such as glass or acrylic rendered?

    Model answer

Glass is shown with sharp white highlights, reflected edges and the background faintly visible through it. Little colour is used, and the edges are drawn slightly darker.

  2. 2

How is wood grain rendered on a product drawing?

    Model answer

A light brown base coat is applied, and darker grain lines follow the form in slightly wavy strokes. End grain is shown with growth rings.

  3. 3

Why does a designer use a single light source when rendering?

    Model answer

A single light source gives consistent highlights, tone and shadow across the drawing. The consistency makes the form read clearly as three-dimensional.

  4. 4

How does a cast shadow improve a presentation drawing?

    Model answer

A cast shadow grounds the product so it does not appear to float. The shadow also emphasises the form and adds depth.

  5. 5

What does a photorealistic CAD render need to look convincing?

    Model answer

A convincing render needs accurate materials, realistic lighting and a suitable background or environment. Reflections and soft shadows make surfaces look real.

  6. 6

How can colourways help to present an innovative design?

    Model answer

A colourway shows the same product in several colour and finish options. Clients can compare versions and choose the one that best suits the target market.
