Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Describe the appearance and working characteristics of pine.

    Model answer

Pine is a pale, straw-coloured softwood with darker growth rings and knots. Pine is light and easy to work, although knots can be hard and resinous.

  2. 2

Give two typical uses of pine and a reason for each.

    Model answer

Pine is used for construction timber such as roof trusses because it is cheap and fairly strong. Pine is used for low-cost furniture because it is easy to work and join.

  3. 3

Why must pine be treated before it is used outdoors?

    Model answer

Pine has low natural durability and rots when repeatedly wet. A preservative or paint system protects it from fungal decay and insect attack.

  4. 4

    Describe the properties of ash.

    Model answer

Ash is a pale, open-grained hardwood that is tough, elastic and resistant to shock. Ash is not durable outdoors and rots if left untreated.

  5. 5

Why is ash used for hammer and axe handles?

    Model answer

Ash is tough and slightly flexible, so it absorbs repeated shock without splitting. The straight grain gives strength along the length of the handle.

  6. 6

Why does ash bend well when steamed?

    Model answer

Ash has long, tough fibres that stretch and compress without breaking once softened by steam. Bentwood chair parts are often made from ash.
