Acrylic, nylon and ABS
- 3 things to know
- AS 1 Paper 1
Overview
The properties, working characteristics and uses of acrylic, nylon and ABS, drilling acrylic, nylon gears and bearings, ABS in LEGO bricks and cases, and choosing between them.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why is acrylic used instead of glass for many signs and display stands?
Give typical uses of acrylic.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Describe the properties of acrylic.
Model answer
Acrylic is a hard, stiff thermoplastic with a glossy surface and excellent optical clarity. Acrylic is brittle and scratches fairly easily.
- 2
Why is acrylic used instead of glass for many signs and display stands?
Model answer
Acrylic is much lighter than glass and less likely to shatter into dangerous shards. Acrylic can be cut, bent and polished easily, and it comes in many colours.
- 3
Give typical uses of acrylic.
Model answer
Acrylic is used for shop displays, signs, light diffusers and car rear light lenses. Acrylic is also used for baths and shower trays.
- 4
What are the working characteristics of acrylic?
Model answer
Acrylic cuts cleanly on a laser cutter, leaving polished edges. Acrylic can be line bent on a strip heater and joined with solvent cement.
- 5
Why is acrylic sheet supplied with a protective film on each face?
Model answer
Acrylic scratches easily, and a scratch spoils its clear, glossy surface. The film protects the sheet during storage, marking out and cutting.
- 6
Why can acrylic crack when drilled, and how is cracking avoided?
Model answer
Acrylic is brittle, so a standard drill can snatch and crack the sheet. A slow speed, a sharp drill ground for plastics and firm support prevent cracking.
