Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What is a pictorial drawing?

    Model answer

A pictorial drawing shows an object in three dimensions as it would appear to the eye. Isometric, oblique and perspective drawings are all pictorial.

  2. 2

How is an isometric drawing constructed?

    Model answer

Vertical edges are drawn vertical, and horizontal edges are drawn at 30° to the horizontal. All three axes use true lengths, so measurements can be taken directly.

  3. 3

Why do circles appear as ellipses in an isometric drawing?

    Model answer

A circle on an isometric face is seen at an angle, so its true shape is foreshortened into an ellipse. The ellipse is constructed within an isometric square or drawn with a template.

  4. 4

What is the difference between one-point and two-point perspective?

    Model answer

One-point perspective has one vanishing point, with the front face drawn flat to the viewer. Two-point perspective has two vanishing points on the horizon line, and the object is seen corner-on.

  5. 5

Why is perspective preferred to isometric for presenting a product to a client?

    Model answer

Perspective shows the product as the eye actually sees it, with receding lines converging. The drawing looks more realistic, although it cannot be measured directly.

  6. 6

How does moving the horizon line change a perspective drawing?

    Model answer

A high horizon line shows the object from above, as if looking down on it. A low horizon line makes the object look tall and imposing.
