Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What is a design context, and how does it lead to a brief?

    Model answer

A design context is the setting in which a problem arises, such as a crowded student bedroom. Studying the context reveals a specific need that the brief then states.

  2. 2

How can a vague brief such as “Design a lamp” be improved?

    Model answer

A stronger brief names the user, the need and the context of use. An example is a portable light that lets a student read in bed without disturbing a roommate.

  3. 3

Why is a design brief often refined after research?

    Model answer

Research may reveal user needs, constraints or existing products that the first brief missed. The refined brief is more focused and realistic.

  4. 4

What is the purpose of analysing research before writing a specification?

    Model answer

Analysis turns raw findings into clear conclusions about users, sizes, materials and costs. Each conclusion then becomes a specification point.

  5. 5

Give an example of how a research finding becomes a specification point.

    Model answer

Research might show that users grip a handle most comfortably at 30 to 40 mm diameter. The specification then states that the handle diameter must fall within that range.

  6. 6

What is market research, and how does it inform a specification?

    Model answer

Market research studies what customers want and what rival products offer, including their prices. The findings set the target price, features and styling in the specification.
