Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Why is cutting down on alcohol advised for someone with high blood pressure?

    Model answer

Regular drinking above the guideline can raise blood pressure over time. Blood pressure usually falls when intake is cut, so reducing alcohol is a first-line lifestyle measure.

  2. 2

How can years of heavy drinking lead to heart failure?

    Model answer

Long-term heavy drinking can weaken and stretch the heart muscle, a condition called alcoholic cardiomyopathy. The enlarged heart cannot pump enough blood, and heart failure can follow.

  3. 3

Why is a weekend binge harder on the heart than the same units spread across the week?

    Model answer

A large dose at once can trigger atrial fibrillation, a pattern sometimes called holiday heart. The high peak of blood alcohol also pushes blood pressure up sharply.

  4. 4

Why does heavy drinking raise blood triglycerides?

    Model answer

The liver turns surplus acetate and fatty acids into triglyceride while it is busy metabolising alcohol. The triglyceride is released into the blood in VLDL particles.

  5. 5

Why was light drinking once thought to protect the heart?

    Model answer

Studies found that light drinkers had fewer heart attacks than non-drinkers. Alcohol can raise HDL cholesterol and make blood less likely to clot.

  6. 6

Why is the protective effect of light drinking on the heart now thought to be overstated?

    Model answer

Many non-drinkers in early studies were former drinkers who had stopped because of ill health. The UK Chief Medical Officers concluded in 2016 that any benefit is small and mainly limited to women over 55.
