Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a nutrient-dense diet, and why do older adults need one?
Model answer
A nutrient-dense diet supplies plenty of vitamins and minerals per calorie. Lean meat, fish, eggs, dairy foods, fruit and vegetables are good examples. Older adults need such a diet because energy needs fall with age while most nutrient needs do not.
- 2
Why are older adults advised to take a vitamin D supplement?
Model answer
Older skin makes vitamin D less efficiently, and many older people spend little time outdoors. A daily 10 microgram supplement helps protect against osteomalacia and fractures.
- 3
Why is calcium important for older adults?
Model answer
Bone density falls with age, especially in women after the menopause, raising the risk of osteoporosis. An adequate calcium intake with vitamin D slows bone loss and reduces fracture risk.
- 4
Why are older adults at risk of vitamin B12 deficiency?
Model answer
Many older people have atrophic gastritis, which reduces stomach acid and intrinsic factor. Less vitamin B12 is then released from food and absorbed, so fortified foods or injections may be needed.
- 5
What is sarcopenia, and how can diet help to slow it?
Model answer
Sarcopenia is the loss of muscle mass and strength with ageing. Enough protein spread across the day, together with strength exercise, helps to slow it.
- 6
Why is constipation common in older adults, and how can diet help?
Model answer
A slower gut, low activity, low fluid intake and some medicines all make constipation more likely. Wholegrain cereals, fruit, vegetables and plenty of fluids help to prevent it.
