- 3 things to know
- AS 2
Overview
Type 2 diabetes, osteoarthritis, sleep apnoea, fatty liver disease, cancers, fertility and psychological effects of obesity in adults and children, and metabolic syndrome.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why does excess visceral fat increase the risk of Type 2 diabetes?
Why does obesity increase the risk of osteoarthritis?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Which health problems are more common in adults living with obesity?
Model answer
Adults living with obesity have higher risks of Type 2 diabetes, CVD and some cancers. Osteoarthritis, sleep apnoea and fatty liver disease are also more common.
- 2
Why does excess visceral fat increase the risk of Type 2 diabetes?
Model answer
Visceral fat releases fatty acids and inflammatory substances that make cells resistant to insulin. The pancreas eventually cannot produce enough insulin to control blood glucose.
- 3
Why does obesity increase the risk of osteoarthritis?
Model answer
Extra body weight increases the load on weight-bearing joints such as the knees and hips. Adipose tissue also releases inflammatory substances that may damage cartilage.
- 4
How is obesity linked to obstructive sleep apnoea?
Model answer
Fat around the neck narrows the airway, which can close repeatedly during sleep. Broken sleep causes daytime tiredness and raises blood pressure.
- 5
What is non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and how is it linked to obesity?
Model answer
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is a build-up of fat in the liver that is not caused by alcohol. Obesity and insulin resistance drive the condition, which can progress to cirrhosis.
- 6
Why is obesity linked to a higher risk of some cancers?
Model answer
Excess body fat raises levels of oestrogen, insulin and inflammatory signals that encourage cell division. Obesity is linked to cancers of the bowel, womb and kidney and to breast cancer after the menopause.
