Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define food security.
Model answer
Food security exists when all people, at all times, can get enough safe and nutritious food for an active, healthy life. The definition was agreed at the 1996 World Food Summit.
- 2
Name the four pillars of food security.
Model answer
The four pillars of food security are availability, access, utilisation and stability.
- 3
What does the availability pillar of food security refer to?
Model answer
Availability means enough food is produced, stored or imported to supply the whole population.
- 4
How does access differ from availability in food security?
Model answer
Access is whether people can afford food and physically reach it. A country can have plenty of food while poorer households still cannot obtain it.
- 5
What is meant by utilisation in food security?
Model answer
Utilisation is whether the body can make good use of the food eaten. Safe water, sanitation, good health and food knowledge all affect it.
- 6
Why is stability counted as a pillar of food security?
Model answer
Stability means availability, access and utilisation hold steady over time. A household that eats well only until a price spike or a failed harvest is not food secure.
