- 1
Why do adults need less energy per kilogram of body weight than teenagers?
Model answer
Growth has stopped in adults, so energy is needed only for maintenance and activity. Energy needs fall further with age as muscle mass and activity decline.
- 2
Why do adult men need more protein than adult women?
Model answer
Men are usually larger, and the protein RNI is set per kilogram of body weight. The RNI for adults aged 19 to 50 is 55.5 g a day for men and 45 g for women.
- 3
What are the main daily dietary targets for healthy adults in the UK?
Model answer
Adults should eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables and 30 g of fibre a day. Salt should be kept to 6 g a day, and free sugars to no more than 5% of energy.
- 4
How does the Eatwell Guide help adults meet their nutritional needs?
Model answer
The Eatwell Guide (2016) shows the proportions of each food group that make up a balanced diet. Fruit and vegetables and starchy carbohydrates make up most of it, with smaller amounts of protein foods and dairy.
- 5
How can a woman with heavy periods meet her iron needs through food?
Model answer
Lean red meat, oily fish, pulses, fortified cereals and dark green vegetables all supply iron. Vitamin C-rich foods eaten at the same meal improve absorption, and tea is best avoided with meals.
- 6
What changes to nutritional needs happen at the menopause?
Model answer
The fall in oestrogen at the menopause speeds up bone loss, so calcium and vitamin D become more important. Iron needs fall because menstruation stops.
