Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What are the aims of managing Type 2 diabetes?
Model answer
Management aims to keep blood glucose close to normal and to reduce the risk of complications. Blood pressure, blood cholesterol and weight are managed too.
- 2
What HbA1c target is usually set for adults managing Type 2 diabetes by diet and lifestyle?
Model answer
NICE usually sets a target HbA1c of 48 mmol/mol (6.5%) for adults managed by diet and lifestyle alone. A target of 53 mmol/mol (7.0%) is used for those on drugs that can cause hypoglycaemia.
- 3
Why are regular meals recommended for people managing Type 2 diabetes?
Model answer
Regular meals spread carbohydrate evenly through the day, avoiding large swings in blood glucose. Skipped meals can cause low blood glucose in people taking some diabetes medicines.
- 4
Why must people with Type 2 diabetes be aware of the amount of carbohydrate they eat?
Model answer
Carbohydrate has the largest effect on blood glucose after a meal. Controlled portions of starchy food at each meal keep glucose rises manageable.
- 5
What did the DiRECT trial (2018) show about weight loss and Type 2 diabetes?
Model answer
DiRECT found that 46% of participants were in remission after a year on a low-calorie diet programme. Among those who lost 15 kg or more, 86% achieved remission.
- 6
What diet did the DiRECT trial use?
Model answer
Participants replaced meals with a low-calorie formula diet of about 850 kcal a day for three to five months. Normal foods were then reintroduced gradually, with support to keep the weight off.
