- 3 things to know
- A2 1

What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How much food is wasted on UK farms?
Why might a farmer leave a crop unharvested?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Who are the primary producers in the food chain?
Model answer
Primary producers are the farmers, growers and fishers who produce raw food. Primary producers form the first stage of the food supply chain.
- 2
How much food is wasted on UK farms?
Model answer
WRAP's central estimate is about 1.6 million tonnes a year, 16% of UK food waste. The true figure is uncertain, with estimates from 0.9 to 3.5 million tonnes.
- 3
Why might a farmer leave a crop unharvested?
Model answer
A crop may not be worth harvesting when market prices fall below the cost of picking. A shortage of seasonal pickers can also leave fruit and vegetables to rot in the field.
- 4
Explain how cosmetic specifications create waste on farms.
Model answer
Retailers set strict specifications for the size, shape and appearance of produce. Misshapen but edible fruit and vegetables are graded out and may be wasted.
- 5
Why do farmers often grow more than they are contracted to supply?
Model answer
Farmers grow extra to be sure of meeting supermarket contracts despite weather or pests. The surplus is wasted when orders turn out lower than expected.
- 6
What are fish discards?
Model answer
Discards are unwanted fish thrown back into the sea, often dead, because they are undersized or over quota. The landing obligation now requires most quota species to be landed rather than discarded.
