- 3 things to know
- A2 1
Overview
Where BPA is found and how it migrates, EFSA's 2023 opinion and the EU restrictions, how dioxins form and build up, the 2008 Irish pork incident and the Stockholm Convention.

What conditions increase the migration of BPA into food?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is bisphenol A, and where is it found in the food chain?
Model answer
Bisphenol A is a chemical used to make polycarbonate plastics and the epoxy resins that line food and drink cans. Small amounts can migrate into food.
- 2
Why is BPA a concern for public health?
Model answer
BPA is an endocrine disruptor that mimics the hormone oestrogen. Exposure has been linked to effects on reproduction, development and the immune system.
- 3
What conditions increase the migration of BPA into food?
Model answer
Heat, acidic or fatty foods and old or scratched containers increase migration. Heating food in polycarbonate containers is a particular risk.
- 4
What did EFSA conclude about BPA in 2023?
Model answer
EFSA cut its tolerable daily intake for BPA to 0.2 nanograms per kilogram of body weight. The new figure was 20,000 times lower than the previous temporary value.
- 5
What restrictions on BPA did the EU introduce in 2011 and 2018?
Model answer
BPA was banned in polycarbonate baby bottles from 2011. From 2018 a lower migration limit applied, and BPA migration into infant foods was not permitted.
- 6
How did the EU respond to EFSA's 2023 opinion on BPA?
Model answer
The EU adopted a ban on BPA in food contact materials in December 2024. Transition periods give manufacturers time to switch to alternatives.
