How can a lack of time act as a barrier to healthy food choices?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by a barrier to healthy food choices?
Model answer
A barrier is anything that stops a person choosing a healthy diet even when they want to. Common barriers include lack of money, time, skills, access and clear information.
- 2
Explain how a low income can be a barrier to healthy eating.
Model answer
Healthier foods such as fresh fruit, vegetables and lean meat often cost more per kcal than energy-dense foods. Low-income households therefore buy cheaper filling foods that are higher in fat and sugar.
- 3
How can a lack of time act as a barrier to healthy food choices?
Model answer
Fresh meals take time to plan, shop for and cook. People with little time choose quick convenience foods, which are often higher in salt and fat.
- 4
How can a lack of nutrition knowledge act as a barrier to healthy eating?
Model answer
People who do not understand nutrition may not know which foods are high in salt, sugar or saturated fat. Knowledge alone is rarely enough, because price, taste and habit also shape choices.
- 5
Why can a lack of kitchen equipment or money for fuel be a barrier to healthy eating?
Model answer
Households without a working cooker or freezer, or unable to afford the energy to run them, may avoid cooking. Cold, ready-to-eat foods such as crisps and sandwiches then replace cooked meals.
- 6
How can a lack of transport limit healthy food choices?
Model answer
People without a car may be unable to reach large supermarkets, where fresh food is cheaper and choice is wider. Small local shops tend to charge more and stock fewer fresh foods.
