Cancer
Wholegrains, fruit, vegetables and antioxidants
- 3 things to know
- AS 2
Overview
How fibre, wholegrains, fruit, vegetables, brassicas and folate may protect against cancer, free radicals and antioxidants, and the beta-carotene trials.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How strong is the evidence that wholegrains protect against bowel cancer?
Explain how fibre may reduce the risk of bowel cancer.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What are wholegrain plant foods?
Model answer
Wholegrains contain all three parts of the grain: the bran, the germ and the endosperm. Examples include wholemeal bread, brown rice, oats and wholewheat pasta.
- 2
How strong is the evidence that wholegrains protect against bowel cancer?
Model answer
The World Cancer Research Fund judged in 2018 that wholegrains probably reduce bowel cancer risk. Dietary fibre carries similarly strong evidence.
- 3
Explain how fibre may reduce the risk of bowel cancer.
Model answer
Fibre adds bulk and speeds the passage of waste through the bowel. Carcinogens are diluted and spend less time in contact with the bowel lining.
- 4
How does the fermentation of fibre in the colon help protect the bowel?
Model answer
Gut bacteria ferment fibre into short-chain fatty acids such as butyrate. Butyrate fuels the cells lining the colon and may encourage damaged cells to die by apoptosis.
- 5
How might wholegrains lower cancer risk through their effect on body weight and insulin?
Model answer
Wholegrain foods are filling and release glucose slowly, which helps with weight control. Lower insulin levels weaken a growth signal that can encourage damaged cells to divide.
- 6
Which cancers have fruit and vegetables been linked to protecting against?
Model answer
Fruit and vegetables have been linked to lower risk of cancers of the mouth, throat, oesophagus, lung and stomach. The evidence for each is suggestive rather than conclusive.
