Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Propose and justify advice on meat for a consumer who wants to cut the climate impact of their diet.

    Model answer

The consumer should eat less red meat and more plant proteins such as beans, lentils and peas. Beef and lamb have far higher greenhouse gas emissions, land use and water use per gram of protein.

  2. 2

What is a flexitarian diet, and why might it be recommended for sustainability?

    Model answer

A flexitarian diet is mainly plant-based but includes occasional meat or fish, unlike a vegan diet, which excludes all animal products. The pattern cuts a diet's footprint without asking people to give up meat entirely.

  3. 3

A family in Belfast wants to buy more sustainable fruit and vegetables. What would you advise, and why?

    Model answer

The family should buy local produce in season, such as Northern Ireland strawberries in summer and apples in autumn. Seasonal local produce needs no heated growing or air freight, and the money supports local farmers.

  4. 4

Propose and justify advice to help a consumer choose sustainable fish.

    Model answer

The consumer should choose fish with the blue MSC label and try less popular species, not only cod, salmon, tuna and prawns. A wider choice of species eases pressure on overfished stocks.

  5. 5

Why should consumers be advised to avoid air-freighted fresh produce?

    Model answer

Air freight has the highest emissions per kilogram of any way of moving food. Produce labelled as flown in, such as some berries and green beans, is best swapped for sea-freighted or local alternatives.

  6. 6

How does planning meals and writing a shopping list make food choices more sustainable?

    Model answer

A meal plan and list mean the consumer buys only what will be eaten. Less food is wasted, and the money saved can go on higher-welfare or Fairtrade products.
