Animal and plant health risks
- 3 things to know
- A2 1
Overview
Veterinary medicine residues and withdrawal periods, antimicrobial resistance, BSE and animal feed, pesticide maximum residue levels, and mycotoxins such as aflatoxin and patulin.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why are veterinary medicine residues in food a risk to public health?
Explain how overuse of antibiotics in farm animals threatens human health.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a veterinary medicine withdrawal period?
Model answer
A withdrawal period is the minimum time between an animal's last dose and slaughter, or collection of milk or eggs. The interval lets residues fall below safe limits.
- 2
Why are veterinary medicine residues in food a risk to public health?
Model answer
Residues can cause allergic reactions in sensitive consumers, for example to penicillin. Antibiotic residues can also contribute to antimicrobial resistance.
- 3
Explain how overuse of antibiotics in farm animals threatens human health.
Model answer
Frequent antibiotic use selects for resistant bacteria in the animal gut. Resistant strains of bacteria such as Salmonella can then reach people through food and become harder to treat.
- 4
What did the EU ban in 2006 to limit antimicrobial resistance from farming?
Model answer
The EU banned antibiotics as growth promoters in farm animals from 2006. Antibiotics may still be used to treat sick animals under veterinary control.
- 5
How did animal feed cause the BSE crisis?
Model answer
Cattle were fed meat-and-bone meal made from the carcasses of infected animals. The infective prion spread through the herd and was linked to variant CJD in humans.
- 6
How was the feed route for BSE closed?
Model answer
A 1988 ban stopped ruminant protein being fed to ruminants. The ban was extended in 1996 to mammalian meat-and-bone meal in all farm animal feed.
