Carbon labels, Rainforest Alliance, MSC and green claims
- 3 things to know
- A2 1
Overview
Carbon footprint labels, the Rainforest Alliance and UTZ, the Marine Stewardship Council, greenwashing, the Green Claims Code and misleading environmental claims.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Define the term carbon footprint.
What does the Carbon Trust's carbon footprint label show?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define the term carbon footprint.
Model answer
A carbon footprint is the total greenhouse gas emissions caused by a product across its whole life cycle. The footprint is expressed as carbon dioxide equivalent, written CO₂e.
- 2
What does the Carbon Trust's carbon footprint label show?
Model answer
The label shows that a product's life-cycle emissions have been measured to a recognised standard. Some versions state the CO₂e per serving and a commitment to reduce it.
- 3
How can carbon footprint labelling help consumers make sustainable choices?
Model answer
Carbon labels let consumers compare the climate impact of similar products. Brands are also pushed to cut emissions so they can show a lower figure.
- 4
Why has carbon labelling had limited impact on what consumers buy?
Model answer
Few products carry a carbon label, so comparison across a whole shop is hard. Many consumers do not understand what a figure in grams of CO₂e means.
- 5
What is the Rainforest Alliance?
Model answer
The Rainforest Alliance is an international non-profit organisation that certifies farms and forests against sustainability standards. Certified products carry a green frog seal.
- 6
Which issues do Rainforest Alliance standards address?
Model answer
Rainforest Alliance standards tackle deforestation, climate change, poverty and human rights abuses on farms. Farmers are trained in methods that protect soil, water and wildlife.
