- AS 2

Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Which 2018 report is the main source of evidence-based recommendations for cancer prevention?
Model answer
The World Cancer Research Fund and the American Institute for Cancer Research published their Third Expert Report in 2018. The report sets out ten recommendations for cancer prevention.
- 2
Why is keeping a healthy weight placed first among cancer prevention recommendations?
Model answer
Excess body fat is the second biggest preventable cause of cancer in the UK after smoking (Cancer Research UK, 2018). Weight control also lowers the risk of heart disease and Type 2 diabetes.
- 3
Propose and justify a recommendation on fruit, vegetables and wholegrains to reduce cancer risk.
Model answer
Adults should eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables a day and choose wholegrain starchy foods. The fibre and antioxidants in these foods protect the bowel lining and DNA.
- 4
What does the World Cancer Research Fund recommend about red and processed meat?
Model answer
Red meat should be limited to no more than about three portions a week, or 350 to 500 g cooked weight. Processed meat should be eaten very little, if at all.
- 5
Justify a recommendation to limit sugar-sweetened drinks as a cancer prevention measure.
Model answer
Sugary drinks add energy without making people feel full, which promotes weight gain. Fewer sugary drinks can help prevent the excess body fat linked to many cancers.
- 6
Why does the World Cancer Research Fund advise limiting fast food and processed food high in fat, starch or sugar?
Model answer
Fast foods are usually energy dense and easy to overeat, which encourages weight gain. Weight gain raises the risk of many cancers.
