Cardiovascular Disease
Blood cholesterol, fatty acids and soluble fibre
- 3 things to know
- AS 2
Overview
Cholesterol targets and ratios, triglycerides, the evidence on saturated fat and SACN 2019, polyunsaturated fats, fish oil trials, soluble fibre, beta-glucan and plant sterols.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What blood cholesterol levels are generally advised for healthy adults?
Why is the ratio of total cholesterol to HDL cholesterol a useful predictor of CVD risk?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Why is high blood cholesterol described as a modifiable risk factor for CVD?
Model answer
Blood cholesterol can be lowered by diet, activity, weight loss and, where needed, medicines such as statins. Lower LDL slows the build-up of plaque in the arteries.
- 2
What blood cholesterol levels are generally advised for healthy adults?
Model answer
Total cholesterol of 5 mmol/L or below is generally advised for healthy adults (NHS). LDL cholesterol should generally be 3 mmol/L or below.
- 3
Why is the ratio of total cholesterol to HDL cholesterol a useful predictor of CVD risk?
Model answer
The ratio combines the harmful and protective fractions in a single number. A high ratio means relatively little HDL is available to remove cholesterol from the arteries.
- 4
What are triglycerides, and how are raised blood levels linked to CVD?
Model answer
Triglycerides are the main form of fat carried in the blood and stored in adipose tissue. Raised blood triglycerides are linked to low HDL, small dense LDL and a higher risk of CVD.
- 5
Apart from diet, what can cause high blood cholesterol?
Model answer
Familial hypercholesterolaemia, physical inactivity, obesity and an underactive thyroid can all raise blood cholesterol. Cholesterol also tends to rise with age.
- 6
What evidence links saturated fat intake to CVD?
Model answer
Population studies show higher rates of coronary heart disease where saturated fat intake is higher. Trials that cut saturated fat and replaced it with unsaturated fat reduced cardiovascular events.
