Overview
Positive and negative energy balance, appetite regulation, energy density, why weight loss slows, and worked weight change calculations.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What happens in a positive energy balance?
What happens in a negative energy balance?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by energy balance?
Model answer
Energy balance is the relationship between energy taken in from food and drink and energy used by the body. Body weight stays stable when intake equals expenditure.
- 2
What happens in a positive energy balance?
Model answer
A positive energy balance means intake exceeds expenditure. The surplus is stored, mostly as fat in adipose tissue, and body weight rises.
- 3
What happens in a negative energy balance?
Model answer
A negative energy balance means expenditure exceeds intake. The body draws on glycogen, fat and some lean tissue, and body weight falls.
- 4
At which life stages is a positive energy balance normal and necessary?
Model answer
A positive balance is needed during growth in infancy, childhood and adolescence. Pregnancy also requires a positive balance to build fetal and maternal tissue.
- 5
How does the body regulate appetite to help maintain energy balance?
Model answer
The hypothalamus in the brain integrates hunger and fullness signals from the gut and fat tissue. Ghrelin from the stomach stimulates hunger, and leptin from adipose tissue reduces it.
- 6
Why can appetite regulation fail to prevent weight gain?
Model answer
Social cues, stress, habit and the taste of energy-dense foods can override fullness signals. People living with obesity may also become less sensitive to leptin.
