What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How do the polyunsaturated fatty acids in oily fish differ from those in vegetable oils?
What are the richest sources of EPA and DHA?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Name three omega-3 fatty acids.
Model answer
Alpha-linolenic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid are omega-3 fatty acids.
- 2
How do the polyunsaturated fatty acids in oily fish differ from those in vegetable oils?
Model answer
Oily fish supply the long-chain omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, with 20 and 22 carbons. Vegetable oils mainly supply 18-carbon fatty acids, such as linoleic and alpha-linolenic acid.
- 3
What are the richest sources of EPA and DHA?
Model answer
Oily fish such as salmon, mackerel, sardines and herring are the richest sources of EPA and DHA. Fish oil supplements and omega-3 enriched eggs also supply them.
- 4
Name three plant sources of omega-3 fatty acids.
Model answer
Rapeseed oil, walnuts and flaxseed supply the omega-3 alpha-linolenic acid.
- 5
How do long-chain omega-3 fatty acids affect blood lipids?
Model answer
Long-chain omega-3 fatty acids lower blood triglyceride levels. Omega-3 fats have little effect on LDL cholesterol.
- 6
Why are omega-3 fatty acids thought to protect the heart?
Model answer
Omega-3 fatty acids make platelets less sticky, so blood clots are less likely to form. Omega-3 fats also help keep the heart rhythm steady and reduce inflammation.
