How can a teenager who dislikes milk meet calcium needs?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How should teenagers meet their high energy needs healthily?
Model answer
Starchy foods such as bread, potatoes, rice and pasta, preferably wholegrain, should form the base of each meal. Nutritious snacks such as fruit, yogurt and sandwiches are better than confectionery and crisps.
- 2
Why do teenagers need more calcium than adults?
Model answer
Teenagers build bone rapidly during the growth spurt and lay down much of their peak bone mass. The calcium RNI for 11 to 18-year-olds is therefore higher than for adults.
- 3
How can a teenager who dislikes milk meet calcium needs?
Model answer
Cheese, yogurt and calcium-fortified plant drinks can replace milk. White bread, canned sardines, tofu and green leafy vegetables add more calcium.
- 4
Why do teenage girls need more iron than teenage boys?
Model answer
Teenage girls lose iron each month once menstruation begins. The iron RNI for girls aged 11 to 18 is 14.8 mg a day, compared with 11.3 mg for boys.
- 5
Why do teenage boys need extra iron during adolescence?
Model answer
Teenage boys gain muscle and blood volume rapidly during the growth spurt. The extra myoglobin and haemoglobin both need iron.
- 6
Why is more protein needed during adolescence?
Model answer
Protein is needed to build new muscle, bone and other tissues during the growth spurt. Teenagers need more protein in total than younger children, though most UK diets supply enough.
