Group 2 elements and their compounds
- 3 things to know
- Papers 1 and 3
Overview
The trends in ionisation energy and reactivity down Group 2, the reactions of the metals with oxygen, chlorine, water and steam, the oxides and hydroxides with water and acids, uses as antacids and to neutralise soil, the solubility trends of the hydroxides and sulfates, the barium meal and the sulfate test.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Write the equation for calcium hydroxide reacting with dilute hydrochloric acid.
Write the ionic equation for a solid Group 2 oxide, MO, reacting with a dilute acid.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How does the first ionisation energy change down Group 2 from magnesium to barium, and why?
Model answer
It decreases. The outer s electrons are in shells further from the nucleus and more shielded by inner electrons, which outweighs the increase in nuclear charge.
- 2
How does the reactivity of the Group 2 metals change down the group?
Model answer
It increases from magnesium to barium.
- 3
Explain why the Group 2 metals become more reactive down the group.
Model answer
Group 2 atoms react by losing their two outer s electrons to form M²⁺ ions. Down the group the first and second ionisation energies fall, so these electrons are lost more easily.
- 4
Write the general equation for a Group 2 metal, M, burning in oxygen.
Model answer
2M(s) + O₂(g) → 2MO(s), forming the white ionic metal oxide.
- 5
What is observed when magnesium ribbon burns in oxygen?
Model answer
It burns with a very bright white flame, leaving a white powder of magnesium oxide: 2Mg + O₂ → 2MgO.
- 6
Write the equation for the reaction of calcium with chlorine.
Model answer
Ca(s) + Cl₂(g) → CaCl₂(s); the product is a white ionic solid.
