Ecological factors and the ecological niche
- 3 things to know
- Unit AS 2
Overview
Climatic factors, how temperature range influences the distribution of a species and light quality as an ecological factor.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Explain how temperature range influences the distribution of a species.
How does the availability of water influence the distribution of plants?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Name the three groups of ecological factors that influence where organisms are found.
Model answer
They are climatic factors, edaphic factors and biotic factors.
- 2
What are climatic factors?
Model answer
Climatic factors are the features of the atmosphere and weather that affect organisms, such as temperature, water availability and light.
- 3
Explain how temperature range influences the distribution of a species.
Model answer
Enzymes work only within a limited range of temperature, so a species is confined to places where the temperature stays within the range its metabolism can tolerate.
- 4
How does the availability of water influence the distribution of plants?
Model answer
Water is needed for photosynthesis, transport and turgidity, so only species adapted to conserve it can occupy places where the supply is poor.
- 5
Explain how light intensity influences the distribution of plants on a woodland floor.
Model answer
Only species that can photosynthesise at low light intensity survive under the shade of the canopy, so the ground flora differs from that of open ground.
- 6
What is meant by light quality as an ecological factor?
Model answer
Light quality refers to the range of wavelengths present, which is altered when light is filtered through a leaf canopy or through water.
