Enzymes
Specificity, cofactors and coenzymes
- 3 things to know
- Unit AS 1
Overview
Enzyme specificity, term cofactor and inorganic cofactor.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Give an example of an inorganic cofactor.
Define the term coenzyme.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by enzyme specificity?
Model answer
Specificity means that each enzyme catalyses only one reaction or one type of reaction, because only a substrate complementary to its active site can bind.
- 2
Explain why an enzyme will not act on a substrate of a different shape.
Model answer
A substrate whose shape is not complementary cannot fit the active site, so no enzyme–substrate complex can form and no reaction is catalysed.
- 3
Define the term cofactor.
Model answer
A cofactor is a non-protein substance that must be present for an enzyme to work.
- 4
Give an example of an inorganic cofactor.
Model answer
Chloride ions act as a cofactor for amylase.
- 5
Define the term coenzyme.
Model answer
A coenzyme is an organic non-protein molecule that binds temporarily to an enzyme and is chemically changed during the reaction.
- 6
From what class of nutrient are many coenzymes derived?
Model answer
Many coenzymes are derived from vitamins in the diet.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Enzymes, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
