Why energy is lost at each trophic level
- 3 things to know
- Unit A2 1
Overview
Recall questions on the material never eaten, the material eaten but not absorbed, and the energy respired and lost as heat, together with the implications for how much of the sun's energy reaches a top carnivore.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why can heat energy not be passed to the next trophic level?
What is egestion?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Name the process by which most energy is lost from a trophic level as heat.
Model answer
Respiration releases energy as heat, which is dissipated from the organism and cannot be passed on.
- 2
Why can heat energy not be passed to the next trophic level?
Model answer
Heat spreads into the surroundings and no living organism can capture it again as chemical energy.
- 3
What is egestion?
Model answer
Egestion is the removal of undigested material from the gut as faeces.
- 4
Explain how egestion causes energy to be lost from a food chain.
Model answer
The energy in undigested food is never absorbed by the consumer, so it leaves in the faeces and enters the detritus food chain instead.
- 5
What is excretion, and how does it cause a loss of energy?
Model answer
Excretion is the removal of the waste products of metabolism, such as urea, and these compounds still hold chemical energy when they leave the body.
- 6
Why do herbivores lose an especially large amount of energy in their faeces?
Model answer
Plant material contains a great deal of cellulose, which is very difficult to digest, so a high proportion of what a herbivore eats passes straight through it.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Ecological Energetics and Nutrient Cycling, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
