Epigenetics, methylation and histone modification
- 3 things to know
- Unit A2 2
Overview
Two main epigenetic mechanisms, what happens during DNA methylation and how methylation of a gene affects its expression.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Name the two main epigenetic mechanisms.
Describe what happens during DNA methylation.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define epigenetics.
Model answer
Epigenetics is the study of changes in gene expression that are heritable through mitosis but that do not involve any change in the base sequence of the DNA.
- 2
Name the two main epigenetic mechanisms.
Model answer
The two main mechanisms are the methylation of DNA and the modification of histone proteins.
- 3
Describe what happens during DNA methylation.
Model answer
A methyl group is added to a cytosine base in the DNA, usually where that cytosine lies immediately before a guanine.
- 4
Explain how methylation of a gene affects its expression.
Model answer
Heavy methylation makes the DNA bind more tightly to the histones and blocks the attachment of transcription factors and RNA polymerase, so the gene is not transcribed and is effectively switched off.
- 5
What are histones?
Model answer
Histones are the positively charged proteins around which DNA is coiled to form chromatin in a eukaryotic nucleus.
- 6
Explain why histones bind tightly to DNA.
Model answer
Histones carry a positive charge and DNA carries a negative charge because of its phosphate groups, so the two are held together by electrostatic attraction.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in DNA as the Genetic Code, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
