Impulse propagation and the speed of conduction
- 3 things to know
- Unit A2 1
Overview
Local circuit and why some invertebrates achieve rapid responses using giant axons.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why does an impulse travel in one direction only along an axon?
Name two factors that influence the speed at which an impulse is conducted.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How does an action potential move along an unmyelinated axon?
Model answer
A local circuit of current flows between the depolarised region and the resting region beside it, depolarising that region in turn, so the impulse is propagated along the fibre.
- 2
What is meant by a local circuit?
Model answer
A local circuit is the small flow of current between an active depolarised patch of membrane and the resting membrane immediately ahead of it.
- 3
Why does an impulse travel in one direction only along an axon?
Model answer
The stretch of membrane just behind the impulse is in its refractory period and cannot be re-excited, so the impulse can only move forwards.
- 4
Name two factors that influence the speed at which an impulse is conducted.
Model answer
The diameter of the axon and whether or not the axon is myelinated both influence the speed of conduction.
- 5
How does the diameter of an axon affect conduction speed?
Model answer
A wider axon offers less resistance to the flow of current along it, so the impulse travels faster.
- 6
How does myelination increase the speed of conduction?
Model answer
Myelin insulates the axon so that current can flow only at the nodes of Ranvier, and the impulse therefore jumps from node to node instead of moving continuously along the membrane.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Co-Ordination and Control, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
