- 3 things to know
- Unit A2 1
Overview
Synaptic bulb, gap that separates the two neurones at a synapse and three neurotransmitters.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is a synapse?
What is the synaptic bulb?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a synapse?
Model answer
A synapse is the junction between two neurones, across which the impulse is passed by a chemical transmitter.
- 2
What is the synaptic bulb?
Model answer
The synaptic bulb is the swollen ending of the pre-synaptic neurone that holds the vesicles of neurotransmitter.
- 3
What do synaptic vesicles contain, and why does the bulb also hold many mitochondria?
Model answer
The vesicles contain the neurotransmitter chemical, and the many mitochondria supply the ATP needed to make the transmitter and package it.
- 4
Name the gap that separates the two neurones at a synapse.
Model answer
The gap between them is the synaptic cleft.
- 5
Name three neurotransmitters.
Model answer
Acetylcholine, noradrenaline and GABA are all neurotransmitters.
- 6
What happens to the vesicles when an impulse arrives at the synaptic bulb?
Model answer
The vesicles fuse with the pre-synaptic membrane and release their neurotransmitter into the cleft by exocytosis.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Co-Ordination and Control, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
