The structure of a neurone
- 3 things to know
- Unit A2 1
Overview
Axon of a neurone, schwann cells and node of Ranvier.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What does the cell body of a neurone contain?
What are dendrites?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a neurone?
Model answer
A neurone is a nerve cell specialised to carry electrical impulses rapidly from one part of the body to another.
- 2
What does the cell body of a neurone contain?
Model answer
The cell body contains the nucleus and most of the cytoplasm and organelles, including many ribosomes and mitochondria.
- 3
What are dendrites?
Model answer
Dendrites are the fine branching extensions of a neurone that receive impulses from other neurones.
- 4
How does a dendron differ from a dendrite?
Model answer
A dendron is a single larger process carrying impulses towards the cell body, and it branches into the much finer dendrites.
- 5
What is the axon of a neurone?
Model answer
The axon is the long single fibre that carries impulses away from the cell body towards the next cell.
- 6
What are Schwann cells?
Model answer
Schwann cells are cells that wrap themselves repeatedly around an axon and so form the myelin sheath.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Co-Ordination and Control, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
