The need for mass transport systems
- 3 things to know
- Unit AS 2
Overview
Mass transport system and why diffusion becomes impractically slow over long distances.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Name the two groups of organisms whose mass transport systems are studied
Give the mass transport system that carries water in a flowering plant.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a mass transport system?
Model answer
It is a system that moves substances in bulk over long distances within an organism, in a stream of fluid or air rather than by diffusion alone.
- 2
Why do large multicellular organisms need mass transport systems?
Model answer
Diffusion alone is far too slow over the distances involved, and the low surface area to volume ratio of a large body cannot supply its inner tissues.
- 3
Name the two groups of organisms whose mass transport systems the specification requires.
Model answer
The two groups are the flowering plants and the mammals.
- 4
Give the mass transport system that carries water in a flowering plant.
Model answer
Water is carried in the xylem, from the roots to the leaves.
- 5
Which plant tissue carries out the mass transport of organic solutes?
Model answer
The phloem carries organic solutes such as sucrose from sources to sinks.
- 6
Name the two mass transport systems of a mammal.
Model answer
The circulation of blood and the ventilation of the lungs are the two mass transport systems of a mammal.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Exchange Surfaces and Gas Exchange, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
